Such was the thought of St. Benedict
when he recommended that we should prefer nothing to the divine office,
as if the gaze of the holy Patriarch were unceasingly attentive
to this duty of our prayer:
to render honour, homage, and service to God
according to the forms, prayers, songs,
and ceremonies instituted by the Church,
because her Bridegroom has given her the words of eternal life;
to associate our voice with that of the angels,
and thus to anticipate the hours of eternity.
